Creating a family room space for a family of six (plus a large dog) can be challenging. But when my client asked me to design a space where the six of them could cozy up and watch TV together, I was excited to accept the challenge!
A little backstory -- my client had purchased two sofas from the Pottery Barn catalog for the family room-- but, ultimately the family felt the sofas were uncomfortable to sit and lounge on. We relocated them to the living room where they don't get a ton of use, but look pretty! (Here's a photo of one of them).
When redesigning their space, I chose a custom sectional from Century Furniture in a luxe gray velvet that wears well and won't show stains. The sectional has a chaise on one side and extra seating on the other. Perfect for those who want to lie down while providing seating for the rest of the family. We had an ottoman custom made, using a fun gray and chartreuse polka dot fabric.
I created a gallery wall using some of their family photos and integrating beautiful prints from Minted.com. Minted.com is a great resource for inspirational and affordable art. You have to check it out!
The pillows were custom made using a gray/chartreuse Ikat fabric and chartreuse chenille.
Now, this cozy room is ready for a crowd!
Here's an important tip, and why using an interior designer can save you money in many cases. My client purchased her original sofas from a catalog without sitting on them first and ultimately was unhappy with the feel and the construction of the product. As a designer, I've carefully vetted the manufacturers that I recommend to my clients. By attending design and furniture trade shows, factory site visits and carefully studying each manufacturer that I use in my designs -- I'm able to get you the best quality products that suit your needs and your price range.
